Organ

Organ

Kei Fujiwara's 'Organ' comes to DVD from the good folk at Synapse to mixed response from the western horror circuit.

The story concerns the trade in body parts, the underground practice of body theft and mutilation for profit - a liver here, a kidney there - there's money to be made and the fresher the corpse the better. The police investigating try making their way into the scene undercover but are soon found out with disastrous consequences.

The plot twists and turns with great style and the graphic and deviant nature of the film delivers a very dark film with a lot of class. The problem for some viewers here though is the very involved and stylish nature of the film makes it a somewhat difficult film to watch unless you are a fan of this style of movie.

Very much along the same lines of films like the Tetsuo series, and obviously influenced by Cronenberg's 'body' horror flicks, 'Organ' really is one for the more patient art-house type viewer. If you're expecting straight down the line Asian horror/terror like 'Evil Dead Trap' or the 'Guts/Entrails' series then you have been warned, 'Organ' is a very involving film and if you don't have the patience to watch its 105 minutes a couple of times through then you'll be disapointed.

The film is very graphic but not in the eye gouging, intesting ripping way that many western horror fans are expectant - the gore here is more in the way of festering bodies 'Day of the Triffids' for the 1990's. Personally, I was a bit wary on my first viewing (in truth I fell asleep !) but on watching it for a second time I found it a highly enjoyable film but it really is a film to watch in the 'right frame of mind'. Leave the beers in the fridge and you'll get so much more from it.

The disc itself presents the film in it's original full screen format, the image quality is very sharp with removable Japanese subtitles and a stereo soundtrack. Also on the disc is an extended look at the sequel 'Organ 2' which is a very welcome addition. Again Synapse have done a grand job with this presentation and fans of this style of film will lap this release up big time.
