The Devil Inside Her

At the beginning of the 1970's, a new film genre exploded out of nowhere and a stunned adult crowd responded by visiting adult theatres right across the United States. However, these films weren't to everyone's tastes. With the rise of feminism, women attempted to bring this new industry down; yet they failed. This new wave of films began taking the nation by storm, despite numerous court cases and obscenity charges. And if the world needed evidence of this new phenomenon taking place then they needn't look anywhere else than inside the movie theatre's during 1972. Deep Throat became one of the biggest engrossing films of that year, beating Hollywood blockbusters along the way.

The adult film entered the mainstream.

The feeble attempts to get this new wave of adult entertainment banned and brushed off the streets continued to end in failure. This wasn't surprising since the 1970's became known as the "me decade," and any spirit that crossed over into the new decade from the 1960's soon became drowned out with a growing lack of empathy. This was evident in the vicious adult films of the time. The crime rate soared, the Beatles had split up, the Vietnam War seemed to go on and on and any protests against the continuing decline in society soon became violent. Exploitation became pornography and pornography became increasingly violent as the decade went on, seemingly reflecting what was going on in American society. This violent pornography reigned supreme throughout the 1970's. Rape, sadism, perversion, horror, violence and death dominated these so-called nasty flicks until the beginning of the 1980's. Anyone But My Husband (a 1975 film) was even cut on its theatrical release! It was not until 2004 that it got released uncut in it's entirety on DVD. These shocking adult films have since gone on to be known as "roughies."

As Ronald Regan became the American President in 1981 his administration targeted the porn industry. Any violent pornography that threatened to enter the new decade was immediately stopped. The Regan Administration used these violent adult films as a method to speak out against pornography in all its forms. It is by no coincidence that since Ronald Regan came into power pornography has increasingly become a 90-minute lacklustre feature film; brimmed with 20-minute sex scenes that are repeated over and over again. Video companies (such as VCA and VCX) were even prosecuted when trying to release uncut adult films that were regarded as obscene by the U.S. courts. VCX almost went out of business.

Alpha Blue Archives, on the other hand, have had the guts to release a whole collection of sadistic adult films, ranging from feature films to compilations compiled on one DVD. Thanks to Alpha Blue Archives, these types of films are being re-discovered and are no longer being sold as just bootleg copies on internet websites. VCX have even started to release uncut adult classics of their own, but it's not known whether this is due to the recent success of Alpha Blue Archives. VCX looks as if they have moved on from their censored past and have since released some of the adult film industry's finest, yet shocking, adult material. Through the Looking Glass, The Taking of Christina, Expensive Tastes, Summer in Heat, Little Orphan Dusty and Come With Me My Love (also known as The Haunted Pussy by Something Weird Video on VHS) have all been released uncut by VCX. Alpha Blue Archive releases, however, are a completely different kettle of fish. Their releases include much more notorious material that should even give the genre fan who believes they've seen it all a good shock or two. Even I find it amazing how they've managed to release some of the most sexually violent adult films of all time. So, get yourself prepared. If you wish to delve into the dark side of adult cinema then you might need to have plenty of hot running water and a bathtub at the ready. Some of these films have the power to make you feel very, very dirty!

The Devil Inside Her happens to be one of those films. It might not be the most notorious roughie you can grasp with your hands, but it slaps you across the face with a wall of filth that is hard to wash off. To be honest with you, if you're looking for an adult film that will successfully create a disturbance inside your pants then I believe you've picked the right film. If it doesn't turn you on then I can guarantee it will sure scare the pants off you! One or the other; take your pick. In fact, The Devil Inside Her is more likely to give the viewer late-night nightmares rather than erections. You have picked a perfect film to watch at night on Halloween.

Unlike most other adult/horror films, The Devil Inside is one of those rare gems that actually mixes horror and pornography quite well . The film itself was directed by Zebedy Colt, who also happened to write it. Zebedy Colt, despite only making a limited number of adult films in the 1970's, is probably the most notorious adult film director of his era. His film catalogue includes The Farmer's Daughter, Affairs of Janice, Terri's Revenge, The Devil Inside Her and Unwilling Lovers. The only other director that could possibly rival Zebedy as a perverted adult film maker is Alex DeRenzy, who directed a contender for the sickest adult film of all time, Femmes Desade. Shaun Costello and Joe Davian have also done some sickening work, and if you manage to track down some of their material you won't end up disappointed. Alpha Blue Archives have just released a boxset containing 15 Shaun Costello films, including the roughie Forced Entry starring the Deep Throat doctor, Harry reems, as a Vietnam War veteran psychopath.

The Devil Inside Her is based in the year 1826 and takes place on a New England farm and the surrounding creepy forest. The farm is home to two pretty sisters called Faith (played by Terri Hall) and Hope (played by Jody Maxwell). They are repressed pair who live on the farm with their deeply religious father, who is played by none other than Zebedy Colt himself! At the beginning of the film, Zebedy spies on his daughter, Faith, talking to Joseph in the field. Joseph is a muscular, blonde farmer, who works on the farm with the two girls and their parents. As Joseph and Faith talk lovingly in the field, Joseph declares his love to Faith by asking her to marry him. Before Faith can give Joseph her answer her infuriated father jumps out from behind the bushes and interrupts the proceedings. Zebedy sacks Joseph and forces his daughter to undress herself. As Faith stands naked in the eyes of God she is ferociously punished for her sins.

Of course, Faith still loves Joseph and she goes searching for him inside the forest without her father's consent. Hope isn't to pleased with the way her sister's relationship with Joseph is going because she is in love with Joseph also. Hope follows Faith to the brook, hidden inside the forest where Joseph is eventually found throwing stones at the water. The scenery here is quite staggering. Despite the low budget of the film the money was well-spent in capturing the feel of 1826, New England.

Whilst Faith and Joseph talk about running away together poor Hope is crying an avalanche of tears behind a tree, listening to every single word. She runs away through the forest, upset that the man she loves is going to be stolen away from her by her own sister. Hope simply cannot allow that to happen.

"I pray to the God or the Devil," shouts Hope. "Give me a sign. I'll give my soul, to possess the man I love!"

This is the point where The Devil Inside Her really becomes a unique xxx/horror film. Hope drags herself through the forest, not knowing that what she has just said cannot be taken back. Her words have unleashed an evil that all her family will be made to suffer from at some point. As Hope walks through the forest, drenched in her own misery, we finally see the first appearance of the devil, lurking between the trees. The devil is completely naked, sporting face make-up, dark eye shadow and wearing (of all things!!) a dog collar around his neck. Rod Dumont plays the role of the devil. He looks like the fifth member of the rock group Kiss during their make-up days. It's not known whether Rod appeared in any other adult films in the 1970's, but if he didn't then that would be a shame. He is a well-endowed man and has a rather unique penis. You'll see what I mean when you watch him chant some unattainable words in the forest as he plays with himself.

From this moment the film really takes off. Scene after scene of depravity and perversion follow, climaxing with a disturbing orgy that would give the perverse orgy in Caligula a run for its money. The devil roams the countryside; transforming himself into various cast members and tricking them into a false sense of allure. First of all, the devil turns into Joseph and (being the devil he is) tracks down Faith, who is pondering on whether she should run away with him. Faith then gets anally raped by Joseph. We know that this is the devil imitating Joseph because he continues to sport the eye shadow. This is how we can separate the devil and recognise him from the person he is imitating. After the rape the devil-imitating-Joseph disappears into thin air, leaving Faith confused on what has just happened.

Hope is still after her man and would go to any lengths to get him. She proved that by summoning the devil. She visit's a witch deep inside the forest. The witch lives in a wooden hut along with her parrot, Nicodemus. The witch coaxes Faith into receiving a love potion in order to lure Joseph around her little finger. The ingredients of the love potion would make most women refuse to drink it, but Hope, despite having doubts on whether she should drink the potion or not, refuses to walk away. The final ingredient to make the love potion work is the semen of the parrot owned by the witch!! What follows is one of the most unique scenes in The Devil Inside Her.

As soon as the love potion is completed, Hope begins to walk away through the forest, excited that the man she is in love with will finally be hers. But as this scene comes to an end we discover that the love potion is actually a trap. As the love potion was being prepared by the witch the devil was hiding inside the hut. He walks out, sporting face make-up, and gives the witch her reward for coaxing Hope into taking the potion. The devil opens his arms and shrouds his cloak around the witch who is on her knees, beginning to give the devil a blowjob.

Hope finds a clearing inside the forest and takes off all her clothes. She drinks the potion as the devil, who suddenly appears inside some ruins, encourages her to drink it. As Hope drinks the potion the devil walks over to her. Hope, who already seems to be under the potion's spell, looks up at the devil, believing him to be Joseph, despite that we see him as the big-dicked devil sporting face make-up. As Hope gives the devil a demonstration of her talented mouth the devil spews smoke from his mouth into the air. After giving the devil a short sucking Hope gets onto her hands and knees and allows the devil to do her doggy style. After the cumshot the rest of the film is followed by sex scene after sex scene.

The devil begins to transform himself into all the other family members. Some viewers may gasp in disbelief at the effects of the devil disappearing and appearing as others within puffs of smoke. You can instantly tell from watching that the budget didn't amount to very much, but this adds to the exploitation value and charm of the film. In an instant you see the devil disappearing in a plume of smoke and then appearing as a family member sporting eye shadow, probing his/her tongue everywhere. The devil continues to transform himself into other family members for the next 20 minutes or so.

As Faith walks back to the farm, shocked and upset that Joseph (although we know it was the devil) raped her, the devil transforms himself into Faith and goes looking for Joseph, probing and frolicking her tongue. Faith then begins to talk in the devil's voice! This creates a genuine unsettling atmosphere and you will question yourself on whether you're watching a porno or a horror film.

The devil continues to deceive the family members by becoming one of them and seducing them. Hope, who was abandoned by the devil in a clearing after a short sex scene, is stuffing her vagina with various types of food whilst screaming in orgasmic pleasure. The devil seduces Joseph under the disguise of Faith. The mother (who we don't see much of throughout the film) rapes Faith with a strap-on. The mother herself gets raped by the devil with the devil rubbing his own cum onto his hairy chest. And Zebedy stumbles across himself with his head between his daughter Hope's legs!! The devil-imitating-Zebedy immediately transforms back to the devil, cums in Hope's mouth, transforms back to Zebedy and, after a puff of smoke, attacks Zebedy in the form of a dog!

Confused?

Suddenly, Faith, Hope and the devil vanish out of thin air. Zebedy, whilst attempting to bring Hope under control after discovering what he called a demon copulating with her, had heard Hope talk of a witches sabbath. Night begins to fall and Zebedy and Joseph join forces to go looking for the two missing girls inside the forest. The father, despite sacking him, begins to trust Joseph and lets him help in ridding the foul demons off their land. Can they do enough to save Hope and Faith from being eternally corrupted by the devil? Will there be a happy ending for the family? I guess you'll have to watch the film to find out.

A word of warning, however!! The sabbath itself is rather disturbing. The devil, the witch, Hope, Faith and many other satanic characters, take part in an orgy that was designed to shock. The orgy is bathed in a red hue and is amongst the most disturbing scenes of hell in the history of adult entertainment. The only other hell sequence that could rival the vision of hell in The Devil Inside Her is the final 10 minutes of Through the Looking Glass. Many of the characters in the orgy take part in disturbing sex acts. If you had an erection up to this point then your erection will probably begin to quiver in fear over what you might soon masturbate over.

Annie Sprinkle takes part in the orgy. Her particular scene is not only noticeable, but also shocking. Annie Sprinkle starred in many adult films throughout the 1970's and 1980's. One of the most controversial scenes she took part in was a piss drinking and female genital piercing scene in the 1983 film, Kneel Before Me. That scene made her quit porn for a while. Only one other scene in her career forced her to reconsider her career and that was the scene in The Devil Inside Her. Put it this way, if you like your adult films to be filled with sick and gross acts of perversion then this scene with Annie Sprinkle will make The Devil Inside Her complete!

Alpha Blue has put some decent extras on the disc. The original theatrical trailer for The Devil Inside Her is included, along with trailers for Sex Wish and Hard Gore (two equally disturbing adult films from the 1970's). There is a bonus satanic scene from the 1972 film, Devil's Due. Devil's Due can be purchased on VHS from both Something Weird Video and Alpha Blue Archives. And finally, there is an interview with zebedy Colt, which is an extensive text interview with his complete biography.

The Devil Inside Her is presented in its complete uncut format with an English 2.0 Mono audio track. The film has been neglected over the years and this is easily recognisable on the audio and visual quality of the film. If you're expecting a re-mastered adult film on par with Synapse's release of The Image then you will be disappointed. There are parts in the film where the audio tends to cut for a second or two. This could easily have been a problem with the original film. After all, it is low budget.

The Devil Inside Her is presented in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.33.1 full screen. I cannot imagine the film to come in any better shape than this. The Devil Inside Her has obviously been gathering dust since its release in 1976. For this reason I doubt there will ever be a re-mastered release in the future. The print has glitches throughout the film. The witches sabbath even has a few faults. Some of the red hue looks over done. It is sometimes hard to see what is going on as the red tends to saturate one or two scenes. But I believe this was intended by Zebedy Colt. The red hue gives the characters in the orgy a demonic, satanic appearance with a black background.

The Devil Inside Her can also be purchased on VHS format from Alpha Blue Archives and Something Weird Video. The Something Weird Video version contains an extra film, the surviving reels of Count Erotico Vampire (another xxx/horror). The Something Weird Video version also has the same visual and audio faults with the Alpha Blue release. However, these faults can be easily forgotten once you start to realise how hard it once was to find an average looking copy of this film. In that aspect, this DVD release of The Devil Inside Her is very unique to own

As a final note, The Devil Inside Her is a very disturbing adult/horror film. The film itself is quite interesting and it just might make you consider exploring the internet for more obscure adult titles. It can easily be bought and enjoyed by general horror fans that are looking for something completely different, instead of the usual cannibalism, slasher, zombie flesh-eating and supernatural horror flicks. But if you're looking for an adult film that is erotic then The Devil Inside Her is not the film for you. I believe The Devil Inside Her will be more appreciated by horror and exploitation fans rather than porn fans. The sex scenes aren't that erotic, unless you like your sex to be dirty and gritty. The film, however, does contain the basic porn ingredients, vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex, masturbation, cumshots over various parts of a female body. The other ingredients are s&m, coercion, vaginal food penetration, orgies, golden showers, DPP and many other perversions that are intended to shock

All in all, The Devil Inside Her is an extremely twisted adult film that shouldn't appeal to most people. However, if you would like to view the dark side of adult cinema and witness some gross, perverse sex acts then you cannot go wrong with The Devil Inside Her.
