Guts of a Beauty

Up till now my only contact with Japan Shock's output has been a dodgy fuzzy bootleg copy of the Argentoesque Evil Dead Trap. So, it was with much anticipation that I approached my first real taste of their output on DVD with Guts of a Beauty.

The story involves a yakuza gang that (as well as the usual drug dealing) abducts young girls and abuse them in preparation to sell them overseas. A psychiatrist (our heroine) stumbles across these goings-on and horrified by her discovery decides to take revenge on the Yakuza members.

Beauty is a great film with an entertaining plot (that somewhat reminded me of Angel of Vengeance to a point) and fine acting by the cast involved. The film moves along at an excellent pace and wont lose your interest (this is reflected in the 70 odd minute running time) and it (like it's DVD counterpart 'Guts of a Virgin') is a delight to watch for fans of the genre. But, be warned - there's a lot of strong stuff going on here (which I won't go into as it will ruin your enjoyment of the film) so a date movie this ain't !!

What particularly pleased me personally was that this was one of those rare occassions that a film lived up to this site's name and delivered the goods unashamedly - Sex, gore and mutant (well, there's just the one mutant !!) action aplenty to both delight and horrify you !! There has been some comment regarding a couple of points in the film where there is some fogging over genitilia/penetration shots and yeah, it is slightly annoying but in no way detracts from your enjoyment of the film (unless you are complete nutter watching this gem with your dick in your hand!!) The (limited) use of fogging seems bizarre anyway considering the extreme and graphic nature of the rest of the film.

The print on show here is lovely - nice clear widescreen image with well handled subtitling in both english and german. The disc also includes trailers for the rest of Japan Shock's current DVD output and when you check this line up out you'll know where all your money will be going with future purchases (Beautiful Girl Hunter and the Evil Dead Trap films look great !)

So, well done Japan Shock with this great release and horror fans new to this genre don't waste any more time pondering - pick this lovely disc up (and more so it's counterpart Guts of a Virgin for that matter!) - you really won't regret it !!
